Forts near Meerut

The city of Meerut has a deep rooted history, the origin of which date back to the times of Ramayana and Mahabharata. A number of relics, reigns, forts, temples are a witness to the glory that the city once stood for. Meerut and its surrounding areas are dotted with a number of such forts, palaces of the bygone era, some even dating back to the 11th century. Some like the Lakshagarh was built during the era of the Mahabharata. The ones that were built during the recent times are relatively well maintained and others are in the ruins. Nevertheless, these forts and palaces are a haven for history lovers and are a mark of the history and heritage of this area.

Ancient Fort at Garhmukteshwar

This fort was believed to have been built by the Pandavas. During the British rule this fort was used as the administrative office without incurring much expenses. Due to very bad upkeep and maintenance, this fort is under ruins, and bears a sad shadow of its original glory.

Lakshagarh

Lakshagarh is of utmost historic importance and relevance as it was believed to have been constructed during the times of Mahabharata. Originally known as the Palace of Lac or Lacquer, this ancient relic was built by Duryodhana. The Kauravas were believed to have burnt this palace in a bid to kill the Pandavas who were in exile. At present it is in the ruins and resembles an old mound, stretching up to 30 kilometers in area. There are a number of ancient buildings of historic times that are located here as well. There are two caves and an Ashram where Gandhiji was known to have stayed here.

Parikshatgarh

Popularly called as Qila Parikshatgarh, this ancient fort has a myriad of stories and tales attached to it. It is believed that the present fort is built on the ruins of the fort that was originally built by King Parikshat, the grandson of Arjuna. During the Mughul rule, the fort was believed to have been reconstructed. Big box of silver coins were unearthed here in 1916, belonging to the times of Shah Alam II. Gandhari Talab that is located here is named after Gandhari, the mother of Kauravas. Close by, there is a Rishi Shring Ashram where it is believed that Vedavyas wrote the epic Mahabharata.

Ahmadgarh Fort near Meerut

This fort is located in Sikarpur, in the Bulandshahr district located 33 kilometers from Meerut. Currently in the ruins, this fort bears a mark of considerable antiquity; some estimating it to having been built during the early 10th Century.

Unchagaon Fort

This fort is situated at Garhmukteshwar along the river Ganga . This fort has been maintained well keeping the elements of the bygone era. This white structure of the Surya Mahal is particularly imposing in a verdant surrounding. This fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel attracting large number of tourists. Since it is located along the stretch of the Ganges, there are dolphins and crocodiles that can be spotted here as well.

Mud Fort

Kuchesar is the place that is synonymous with the mud fort that is present here. It was built in the mid 18th century by the Jat rulers. The structure originally had seven turrets that served as a shield from possible attacks from the British. This Fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel, keeping in mind the ancient elements of the structure. This place is located at Hapur and is 22 kilometers from Meerut city.

Mustafa Castle

The Mustafa Castle was by Nawaz Mohammed Ishaq Khan in memory of his father Mustafa Khan Shaifta. This imposing palace is located in the Cantonment area of Meerut, and is spread over 30 acres and is one of the oldest structures in Meerut city. Known for its distinct style and fine architecture, this palace is known to be an amalgamation of many styles of architecture. The finesse and grandeur of the interiors is a testimony of the unique style, which once had hosted a number of dignitaries, political figures and the royalty.
